Targa Florio and female pilots
In consideration of the particular hardness of the competition, that behaved a great physical work, few have been the women that have participated in the Targa Florio.
After the first apparition of Madame the Blon, in 1906, it will is necessary to wait for the anni'20s to see to the work Antoinette D'Avanzo, Elizabeth Juneck and Margò Densieidel.
In the postwar period, you/he/she can be assisted to the evolutions of Ada Pace, Isabella Taruffi, Anna Maria Peduzzi and Maria Teresa De Filippis.
In more modern times, in the years 70, Marie Claude Beaumont has participated, Pat Moss, Giusi Gagliano, Cristine Bekers, Anna Cambiaghi, Serena Pittoni, Rosa Adele Facetti, Lella Lombardi, Carla Bresciani, Simone Alain and Rosalba Soldano.
The only one to get considerable results has been the turinese Ada Pace, that has participated from 1958 in 1963 with Alpha Romeo, Osca, Ferrari and Abarth-Simca.ad ottenere risultati considerevoli è stata la torinese Ada Pace, che ha partecipato dal 1958 al 1963 con Alfa Romeo, Osca, Ferrari e Abarth-Simca.
In 1960, after a magnificent competition with the Osca-Maserati, the Pace succeeds in gathering the victory in her own category (1100 Sports) and to arrive 11 ^ absolute, inserting by force himself/herself/itself in him "squadrons" official Ferrari and Porsche.
1922-baronessa D’Avanzo
And' also true that the history of the sporting auto-racing enumerates a lot of legendary runs: the Mans, Mille Miglia, Indianapolis, Daytona, Montecarlo... but nobody exalts his own peculiarities as the Targa Florio. One of the famous italian race in the world and with a brilliant beginning: in fact the autos had to race on roads of country, real mulattiere, and the inhabitants of the crossed countries had to hold back in the house the pets and from courtyard.
The competition has been wanted, created, financed and organized by Vincenzo Florio, a palermitano of rich family fascinated by the new mean of locomotion and already known in the environment to have participated to some competitions of beginning century and to have founded, in 1905, the Cup Florio (auto race to Brescia). And' to Paris that the run was conceived, says Vincenzo Florio '' u Cavaleruzzu '' it traced the run on a sheet of paper, discussing with its friend Henri Desgrange manager of the famous magazine french '' the auto ''  wrote...Cerda Caltavuturo Petralia Geraci Castelbuono Isnello Collesano Campofelice... this run was very audacious not away from Palermo and free from passages to level; its length was of 146Km and 900m.
The Targa Florio is disputed 61 times, practically without solution of continuity (if they are excepted the years of the two world wars), from 1906 to 1977. Once the competition has been transformed only on a trial basis by test velocistica of "regularity", precisely in 1957, when the recent accident that marked the death of the Mille Miglia put the organizers of the Targa in front of the choice to suppress the competition or to turn her/it into a walk or a little anymore. The organizers - Vincenzo Florio in head - they opted for giving continuity to the run however.
The Sicilian roads son been always theater of the run and particularly those holds and tortuous that cross the mountainous chain of the Madonie. The run has contributed to make to know the enchanting environment of the Madonie in the world and you/he/she has given a notable contribution to the international tourist movement toward that that has become today the Park of the Madonie. A Park that is a casket of landscape treasures, botanical, faunistici, architectural, human and productive. Only in few occasions the run has been combined to the Turn of Sicily and she is developed along the periplo of the island while in the quadriennium 1937-1940 have emigrated to the Park of the Favorita to Palermo, never therefore abandoning the earth of the Trinacria.
The Targa Florio immediately entered the legend for the enormous inherent difficulties in the hardness of the layout to the point that, especially in the first years, also the solo to succeed in completing the run meant to complete an enormous enterprise.
Naturally also the houses builders that have gone out in the open with success during the years have always put in prominence the performances gotten by the motorcars of own construction publicizing her without saving.
Unfortunately also the Targa Florio has had to make the accounts with accidents, corpses and wounded among the public and among the pilots: the count's death Giulio Masetti remembers particularly him, happened following a street exit of his/her Delage during the 1° turn of the edition of April 25 th 1926; for the one who believes in the cabal of the numbers, the Targa Florio had reached the edition number 17 and the car of the Masetti it was marked from the number 13. Shortly after this serious accident, the number 13 won't be assigned to the cars anymore in run, neither in Italy neither to the foreign countries.
In 1955 and in the years that have gone since 1958 to 1973 the Targa Florio she has been among the titled competitions to the goals of the International or World Championships reserved to the cars Sport or Gran Tourism, assuming therefore one indeed remarkable importance, testified by the descent in field of resonant names, both of pilots and of houses builders. After the edition 1973, marked by a numerous series of enough serious accidents that showed as him by now anachronistic circuit of the Madonie few suited him to entertain competitions for very powerful cars, the Targa Florio was excluded by the circuit of the great international tests. The competition had then not still three editions too much thrilling, in 1977, likewise to how much happened for the Mille Miglia twenty years before, also in the case of the Sicilian test the end was determined by a serious involving accident the spectators: Sunday May 15 th 1977, day when he raced the 61/esima edition, the Osella-Bmw piloted at that time by Gabriella Ciuti, went out street in a line of mixed-fast that followed the rectilinear one of Buonfornello, overwhelming the spectators and provoking two corpses and three serious (among which the same pilot) wounded: the competition was suspended and the classification worded in base to the passages at the end of the 4° turn (of the 8 expectations in origin). To that point, the true Targa Florio exhausted her cycle: beginning from 1978 the competition was turned into Rally and denominated "Rally Targa Florio."
Today the Targa Florio is remembered Vincenzo Florio of Cerda to the Museum, situated in the ex places of the Motel Aurim I lodge that has entertained the pilots and in whose garage was prepared the famous Alfa Romeo 33 TTs 3, the museum it is open every day and with free entry. They are visible and consultabili newspapers, books, classifications, and in exposure many heirlooms, plastic pictures and so much material that it makes ripercorrere the mythical Targa Florio.
