The bronzy statue of the "Satiro danzante", equal to a height of around 2,5 meters, it goes up again to the Hellenistic period. It represents a mythological figure, a demon doing part of the procession orgiastico that accompanied Dionisio god of the wine.

The Recovery
The history of the recovery of the statue of the dancing satyr begins in the 1997 spring, when the fishing-boat of "Capitan Ciccio", belonging to the fleet marinara of Mazara del Vallo and commanded by the captain Francesco Adragna, during a country of fishing in the narrow one of Sicily, between Pantelleria and Capod Bon, recovered a bronzy leg. In the night between on March 4 and 5marzo 1998, finally, the same fishing ripesca, from the around 500 meters under the level of the sea in which had abandoned, the sculpture to which the leg belonged, unfortunately deprived of the braccias, and considering the importance of the recovery the delivery to the city Civic Museum. 
For the Satyr the better hospital of Italy was immediately chosen with the purpose to assuage the punishments of the time and the sea that had heavily jeopardized its nature and its consistence. You/he/she was submitted in date October 2 nd 1998 to the good technicians of the Central institute for the restauration in Rome with the purpose to perform the opportune interventions to bring the sculptural work to his/her ancient shine.
The  Restauration
To facilitate the movimentazione of the find during the operations of restauration, being it I deprive of the legs and of the native base, a special mobile support has been realized constituted by a metallic loom composed by two coupled seed-cylinders. These wound the Satyr and, rotating on his/her own axle, they allowed to modify to liking the position of the statue. Reached the wanted position, it easily got off him one of the two elements and him it proceeded with the job, avoiding to the manufactured article any consequential trauma from the moves and from the changes of position that the intervention of restauration involved. The surface of the manufactured article, during the arrival in the laboratory, you/he/she has appeared covered from thick incrostazioni determined by the physical-chemical conditions of the site of position. Numerous they were, besides, the traces of sea organisms bentonici, Madrepore, bivalve Molluscs, sea Worms, while, from observations immediately conducted after the recovery, the absence of fitobentos is jumped, that is algae and aquatic plants, since it confirms the elevated depth of the recovery.

From the chart of the examinations EDXRF resulted evident the variability of the lead way; the middle percentage of this metal is, however, enough tall and it is attested around 16 - 17%, quantitative that he finds, habitually in manufactured articles of Roman age. 
If the results of the quantitative analysis didn't constitute a convincing datum to determine the dating of the manufactured article, in the hope to be able to draw information around the origin of the lead used in the fusion, he shortly effected the analysis of the isotopes. 
On the other hand, inside the statue traces of the earths of fusion are not preserved and this also excludes the possibility to rather reach to a precise dating some work through the analysis of the termoluminescenza.
The statue reaches a general weight of Kg 108 (96 the body, 12 the disconnected leg), while the middle thickness of the metallic walls is of around 6/7 mm. All' inside the structure of steel support has been situated, constituted from a connected vertical auction to a strong I untie spherical of base. The shoulders have been sustained by a crossroad superior, while a couple of raggiere of four auctions every you are been destined to the side support inside the chest. 
It completes the system an oblique auction for the suspension of the leg. The general weight of the whole reaches around 140 kg. After the treatment of restauration you/he/she has been necessary to protect the statue from the environmental damp that would bait new processes of corrosion; it has been contained inside a showcase that assures the maximum one some isolation from the surrounding environment, with a checked inside atmosphere.

The Exhibition
The show of the dancing Satyr has been inaugurated in date March 31 st 2003 near the Chamber of the Deputies of Montecitorio, Rome, to the presence of the President of the Republic Charles Azeglio Ciampi, of the President of Deputies Pier Ferdinando's Chamber Country houses and of the mayor of Rome Walter Veltroni. Such exhibition is open up to June 2, getting an ample success and a notable national prominence. July 12 th 2003 the dancing Satyr is finally redelivered with all the crismis of the ufficialità to the authorities of the city of Mazara of the Go him/it, where in show is currently to the public near the Church of Plebiscite Sant'Egidio-plaza and visitable every day. 
In 2005 the Satyr has been transported for being exposed to the National Museum in Tokyo and consequently to the Universal Expò of Aichi 2005 in Japan.
The Dating
 
According to Sebastiano Tusa (superintendent of the sea of the Sicilian Region) the ship that transported him/it made shipwreck in the area of sea between Pantelleria and Head Bon in Tunisia between the III and the II. 
A dating of the work to the IV century B.C. you/he/she has been proposed by Paul Moreno (university in Rome Tre), according to which the statue should be identified with the "satyr periboetos" of the famous sculptor Prassitele, quoted by Plinio. Such dating would be confirmed by a comparison with a dancing satyr in front of the god sat Dioniso represented on a vase attic dated to the IV century B.C. 
The qualification of "Satyr in ecstasy" it was born from the comparison with the innumerable ancient reproductions on gems and reliefs that complete the gesture and the attributes.
