Three miles east part of the aristocrats rise buildings of the tuna Secco, whose networks were dropped a few meters from the shore: catturava large pelagic fish in the spring along the waters of the Gulf of Castellammare in their race for reproduction . The Tonnara San Vito Lo Capo is located at the western Gulf of Castellamare, in the bosom of the sea called "Dry", near Mount Monaco, on an overhanging bottom. It is difficult to determine the year of construction of the building; citations concerning an initial nucleus back to 1600, but we believe we can assume that dates back to the early fifteenth century. Most sources indicate how the property of the Monastery of Santa Rosalia in Palermo, although the Marquis de Villabianca, so indeed confused, also cites the Monastery of San Vito di Palermo. In 1860 Cavour, via a law indictment, expropriation and religious goods in 1872 the Tonnara of Dry is purchased by Vito Foderą of Castellammare del Golfo. Until then perhaps it is improper to speak of tuna, but had a small "tonnarella" and the building was composed of a building and a tower. Since 1872 the Tonnara change leaves the factory is built where salavano and inscatolavano tuna, the building is enlarged, built the garden behind and in front of the terrace. Well this is the best period in the economic sense; Vito Foderą maintains relations with the whole Italy and sells tuna, not only in Sicily, but also in Naples, Livorno and La Spezia. In 1920 dies Foderą, and the widow Silensi in Foderą the rent; first, from 1920 to 1924 the brothers Plaja, and from 1925 to 1929 the brothers Monticciolo. In 1930 the brothers Plaja buy tuna and 1933 was signed the contract. The family networks Plaja lowered for the last time in 1965, but already the latest mattanze were negative. In 1969 it was moved to the nearby golfetto of San Vito Lo Capo. Calata to Spanish for preventivate strong currents, had a negative debut, but it is believed that the decline in operations conducted carefully, would lead to better results. The plant is not functioning since 1920, because Plaja have never boxed fish: this was sold directly to the fish market. In the hands of the Plaja structure has never been amended; were made only interventions restoration or consolidations.
Currently, the complex is impractical and unfortunately in a state of neglect.
