The Arenella, which was once a fishing village, is now a charming village on the coast northwest of Palermo. Characteristic its port, consisting of two docks repaired, and the sea bottom, rocky and not very deep. This area is known for its past fish, which revolves around the Tonnara Florio, one of the oldest buildings owned by the family symbol of bourgeois nineteenth Palermo, Florio precisely. The complex of tuna that has ancient origins probably date back to the fourteenth century, as indeed are very ancient methods of tuna fishing that it was headed. It was established for real concession and the Prince of Niscemi Vitale Valguarnera second genito Prince Valguarnera, obtained in 1645, the granting of the title of Duke above this Tonnara by King Philip IV. Starting in 1830 Vincenzo Florio began to buy some shares of tuna, belonged to aristocratic families, and in 1838 if fully won an auction. Following Vincenzo Florio commissioned architect friend and collaborator Carlo Giachery processing, and so Tonnara party house. Thus was born between 1840-44, a striking neo-Gothic building inserted in a Mediterranean, and for its four pinnacles was also called "Four Pizzi. This unusual design recalls a Gothic English, sweetened by a romantic backdrop Mediterranean. Giachery Likewise, in 1852, was commissioned, again inserted as a whole dell'Arenella, windmill for grinding of sommacco, from which tannin is extracted, which was one of the flourishing trade Sicilian. Part of the complex was used for home use on weekends and many illustrious personalities were hosted in refined interiors, not least Zarina of Russia, which during his stay in Palermo if they loved to do so faithfully reproduce the "Four Pizzi" in St. Petersburg, under the name of "Rinella, construction still exists. Once the golden period, Vincenzo Florio retreated there with his family, eleggendola to his home and his space housed parties and dances where a high society across Europe was always well represented. The history of this tuna is crossed by continuing disputes with neighboring Tonnare of Mondello and the Virgin Mary. For the most part they were issues related to compliance with the minimum distance of three miles that legislation had to be considered contemporary between two tuna because no one gave discomfort to another. The spirit of conflict, which have long animated the ports of these neighboring villages, is well represented by the story that concentrated ownership and the discovery of a wooden statue of Sant'Antonino, protector of tuna and tonnaroti. The tuna stayed in office until the early twentieth century, then, changed the course of tuna, had to close the fishery.
