San Giorgio was the Tonnara starting in 1407 when King Martino granted Berengario Orioles sea of St. George for the decline in tuna. Since then this activity has characterized the activity center of this seaside until the early sixties, making it one of the most famous throughout the province.
Today this valuable testimony of a seafaring culture that had survived for almost a millennium, we have some shreds of living, home owners in recent Cumbo, survived to cement castings that have been demolished and removed forever the entire structure for the implementation of small tourist residences. Dell'assetto original manufacturing remained the only facility plan and volume.
The old building, inserted between the new bodies, gutted and is in serious state of deterioration. The Superintendency of Messina bond submitted to the building that does not managed to destroy all movable survivors (palischermi, floats, anchors of enormidimensioni), which now lie abandoned sull'arenile.
Since then inertia administrative and general indifference led to the gradual disappearance of many items that still, a few years ago, could be saved by the slow and inexorable abandonment which have been subjected for decades.
The remains of two huge palischermi, for time immemorial had endured the most terrible weather, were destroyed by fire. It remains still in a bad condition, but it is still possible to recover the remaining anchors.
